Either way the basic idea is the same.  Rather than have an exterior rain system hanging off the outside of your home the fascia board is extra tall creating a trough which holds the rain water coming off the roof.  There are then little holes, called scuppers, which drain the water through the bottom into the connected downspouts.

This drainage system isn’t really a great option in Washington State because of our tremendous amount of water and especially because all the old style of built up systems were lined with a membrane called torchdown.  Torch down isn’t made for standing water and as a result water seeps through the bottom into the soffits below often times causing rot.

Today we have a better material than the old torch down membrane previously used.  We use a vinyl called PVC which is much better for standing or ponding water.  Some companies use TPO, which is okay, but because it’s so much stiffer we think PVC is a better product to line your gutters with.
